‘Jackass’ reputation loser

September 25, 2009

“… and the award for biggest Jackass goes to …. Kanye West!”

I know award ceremonies are designed to celebrate achievements, or other notable acts, but the arguments about who should have won, rather than who did win, invariably steal the limelight after the winners are named.

Kanye West’s outrageous, arrogant, outburst during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV video awards was a disgrace. Grabbing the microphone from Swift’s hand and humiliating and belittling her as she enjoyed her moment in sun, made sure he was in the headlines alright.

To have her reputation trampled on in such a heartless, public, way was unjustified, unprofessional and completely out of order, and the celebrity audience made sure he knew it.

Swift deserves every credit for maintaining her composure and demonstrating a maturity, and grace, way beyond her 19 years, both during the outburst itself and afterwards.

I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised. Given an anagram of ‘Kanye West’ is ‘Yet We Sank’ maybe it was to be expected. Ah well, it’s highly likely he’ll find himself a winner himself this month – topping my ‘Reputation Losers’ list. He’d certainly deserve it.

Mind you, he’s got some stiff competition this month with both Serena Williams and Roger Federer also vying for the top spot.

One of the most unattractive attributes there is, is to be a sore loser – even if it’s on behalf of someone else. Ugly, and spiteful, behaviour, even if it is followed by profuse apologies, is a major reputation loser.
